Watering grain jeopardizes quality and reputation

Everyone seems to know hydrating grain is illegal but few seem to know what the law says or how strictly it is enforced, if at all. “If you’re found to be knowingly watering grain out of a hose, you could likely be found to be in contravention of the Canada Grain Act,” said Derek Bunkowsky, […] Read more

Keep ducks and row crops in line

The first implement pass affixes guidance lines for the rest of the season despite changes in machine width

High-value row crops demand a high degree of accuracy during in-crop spraying or tillage operations. High-value can become mid-value if weeds are missed or plants are accidentally sliced or sprayed. John Deere presented row-croppers with a solution last winter when it introduced its new AutoPath system, which provides identical row-to-row guidance data throughout the season, […] Read more

Single row drills take back seat to zigzag

Small scale plot comparisons are OK if you’re looking for trends, but if you want credible data that farmers will believe, then you’ve got to take it to the field. As well, if you can involve university researchers, it helps measure the results. Such was the thinking at Lemken recently as they began upgrading support […] Read more

The voluntary waiting period after calving typically lasts two months. Where possible, The Moonsyst system identifies heats, and alerts are sent directly to the farmer's phone. If a confirmed "insemination" is completed, the status of the cow automatically changes to "inseminated." Mooncloud software continues to monitor the cow for heat detection and will send a "possible open" signal if heat is detected after insemination. With a positive pregnancy check, the status of the cow changes to "pregnant," and the system continues to monitor the cow's condition and check for health concerns. Two months in advance of calving, Mooncloud generates a "drying off" task. During calving, Mooncloud monitors the cow pre-birth and post-birth.

Bolus helps producers monitor heat cycles

Monitoring heat cycles in beef and dairy cows improves breeding success. Better heat detection means higher percentages. Transmitted real-time digital data from within the rumen gives farmers ultimate information. The folks at Moonsyst Smart Rumen Monitoring figured that if researchers can install lights and video cameras inside a cow’s rumen, then they should be able […] Read more

Ultimate tillage tools turning Canadian terra

Soil engaging tools are a big expense on many farms, especially where deep tillage is involved. It’s a nuisance to stop in the midst of an operation to change tips. Not only a nuisance, but lower quality tips do not wear uniformly, leaving an uneven second-rate job in the soil. The result is not what […] Read more
