The folks at Moonsyst Smart Rumen Monitoring figured that if researchers can install lights and video cameras inside a cow’s rumen, then they should be able to install a small bolus equipped with sensors and a transmitter. The Hungarian company has developed a high tech device that tracks six main factors: heat detection; rumen temperature; health condition; water intake; calving; and rumen pH.
Moonsyst is supported by cloud-based software that can be accessed on a phone and computer. The software uses artificial intelligence to predict a cow’s health and heat events. The bolus captures animal activity, rumen temperature and movement. The more information collected, the more accurate predictions become.
The boluses are maintenance free and ready to use out of the box. They’re designed to be easily swallowed and remain in the second chamber, the reticulum, during the lifetime of the animal. The bolus shell is an acid proof resin that protects the electronic parts and causes no harm inside the animal. The bolus is orally administered using a standard bolus gun. The bolus is 32 millimetres in diameter, 100 mm long and weighs 200 grams.
Each bolus has a unique ID linked to a specific host animal. The bolus is equipped with a battery with a six-year life span.
Farmers can access information 24-7 anywhere, through Mooncloud software. This allows dairy and cow-calf operators to make timely, accurate breeding decisions. The Gateway communication link, which relays information from the bolus, is a plug and play solution typically installed at a cattle barn.
Through Mooncloud’s simple graphical visualization of the information, management decisions on an individual animal or whole herd level are presented to farmers, veterinarians and nutrition experts.
