Have you ever seen a man wearing a toque talking about rain in Australia?

I hadn’t either until a few minutes ago when I checked out the Canadian Wheat Board’s youtube site and watched the video commentary provided by a betoqued weather and crop conditions analyst named Stuart McMillan. (Oddly, my markets editor – also named McMillan – emailed me about this. Is there some sort of McMillan clan conspiracy here?)

The disastrous harvest situation in much of Australia’s eastern wheat area is a huge story in world markets right now, but I haven’t written about it here or in the paper. I haven’t written about it here because I haven’t interviewed anyone about it yet, and I haven’t interviewed anyone about it yet because the other McMillan guy – D’arce – wrote his column about it in this week’s (December 9) issue on page 27. So if you want to know what a mega bad harvest for Australian farmers might mean to you, check out D’arce’s column or the CWB youtube page.
