Saskatchewan’s agriculture ministry is planning an agricultural awareness summit in Regina in February.

The idea is to find ways to improve public perception of the industry and promote its benefits.

Agriculture minister Lyle Stewart said when he was first appointed in May that this was one of his priorities.

“Our industry has a great story to tell and this summit will generate ideas on how to better tell that story and dispel misconceptions about agriculture,” he said in a news release.

Discussions will look at current awareness efforts, how to educate the public and how to encourage people in the industry to share their positive stories.

With nearly half of Canada’s farmland, 30 percent of the biotech industry, the second largest beef cow herd and top spot among other provinces for agri-food exports, Saskatchewan is best suited to host this type of event, the government said.

Saskatchewan was also the first province to sign onto the Agriculture More Than Ever campaign.

The summit will be held Feb. 5-6 and be followed by annual updates for participants to note progress and adjust direction.
