Refuel water pump from truck’s gas tank

CANDO, Sask. – Like many western Canadian farmers, Richard Elenko uses an old fuel truck to supply water to his sprayer. And like many farmers, he has the inconvenience of carrying around a small jerry can of gasoline to keep his fill pump supplied.

To get around that hassle, Elenko and his mechanic devised a simple fill system that eliminates the need for gas in a can.

The tanker has a gas engine, so there’s already a big gas tank available on the truck. Using an electric fuel pump salvaged from an old vehicle, Elenko pumps gas directly from the truck’s fuel tank into the water pump fuel tank using a switch on the floor inside the truck.

VIDEO: Ag in Motion documentary launches second season

The second season of the the Western Producer’s documentary series about Ag in Motion launched Oct. 8.

The electric pump is mounted in the filter and pump compartment on the side of the truck frame.

A switch just above the electric fuel pump controls it. When Elenko needs fuel for his water pump, he turns the switch on the truck floorboards, puts the outlet from the electric fuel pump into the water pump fuel tank and hits the switch in the compartment.

When the tank is full, he shuts the fuel pump off and is on his way. No mess, no hassle.
