FARGO, N.D. – The small list of mechanical-drive, high-clearance sprayers is growing with the recent introduction of the Redball 7830 2WD sprayer.

It is Redball’s first self-propelled sprayer, and the Big Iron show in Fargo was its introduction in the northern states.

Redball spokesperson Tony Fath said the Minnesota company decided to go with mechanical drive because it is less complicated and less costly than hydrostatic drive. Mechanical drive also provides better fuel economy, better traction in muddy conditions and lower maintenance costs over the long run, he added.

VIDEO: Green Lightning and Nytro Ag win sustainability innovation award

Nytro Ag Corp and Green Lightning recieved an innovation award at Ag in Motion 2025 for the Green Lightning Nitrogen Machine, which converts atmospheric nitrogen into a plant-usable form.

“We only make one model at this time, and we keep it simple by using all off-the-shelf components,” Fath said.

“It has a 1,200 gallon 304 stainless steel tank and a 275 horsepower John Deere Tier III diesel with 758 foot pounds of torque. All this goes through an Allison 3000 five speed automatic with the locking torque converter. Top speed in fifth is 33 m.p.h.

“We use a JCB differential with on-the-go hydraulic lockup, and our drop boxes are all gear driven. They’re Fairfield. No chains in there. So when you put this all together, it has excellent power-to-ground drive train efficiency. We really don’t need four wheel drive.”

Redball offers two controllers, both compatible with current ISO criteria – the Raven 4400 and the Raven Viper Pro.

Growers who want to do in-crop nitrogen application are also offered a Greenseeker option.

Boom widths are 80 and 90 feet and boom height is adjustable from 25 to 72 inches.

Fath said the booms are a lattice-truss pendulum design with built-in yaw control.

As one boom tries to move forward, it pulls the other boom backward, minimizing the force transferred to the centre section and the chassis.

Redball installs a Hypro 9306C-HM5SC pump that handles 212 gpm at 1,000 r.p.m. The rinse tank holds 140 gallons.

The hydraulic system holds 35 gallons and is pressure compensated to 2,600 psi.

The air bag suspension has a sway control feature that automatically levels the rear axle left and right when spraying on a side slope. The sliding axles ride on replaceable urethane guides. The chassis has 48 inches of crop clearance.

The 120 gallon fuel capacity is divided into 60 gallon tanks, with one on each side of the chassis for better weight distribution.

The Redball 7830 carries a list price of $185,000.
