Case, New Holland launch 530 hp tractors

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Published: February 23, 2006

The new standard in big four wheel drive tractors from Case and New Holland is 530 horsepower.

The Case STX530 and the New Holland TJ530 are both fitted with the 15 litre Cummins QSX15 straight six-cylinder, after-cooled turbo diesel. This is a 24-valve, Tier 3 compliant engine that claims a 40 percent torque rise and a 54 hp power growth at 1,800 rpm.

The cross-flow head design intakes air from one side and vents exhaust directly out the other side, designed to allow the head to run cooler and provide a smoother airflow through the combustion chamber.

Oil pump capacity is up to 25 percent greater than on previous models, the manufacturers say, providing more engine lubrication. Engine cooling capacity has also been increased and a water system filters contaminants and adds a conditioner to maximize engine reliability.

One benefit of fully electronic controlled engines is their ability to continually monitor operating conditions and adjust fuel and air flows. By automatically optimizing performance, fuel efficiency and emissions can be improved.

Most of the engines in the new Case and New Holland big tractor lineup share the same improvements as the 530 hp high end tractors.

The Case showroom features six new models based on three distinct frame sizes. Like the STX530, the other five models match engine horsepower to their names.

The wheeled STX280 and STX330 use 8.3 litre and 9.0 litre engines. Both the STX380 and the STX430 share a 12.9 litre Case IH engine with 40 percent torque rise and are available in wheeled, heavy-duty wheeled, scraper and Quadtrac configurations. The STX480 offers the same configurations as the STX380 and STX430, but is powered by the same Cummins engine as the STX530.

The New Holland showroom sports six new 4WD tractors, also based on three frame sizes and also with model names that match the horsepower ratings.

The TJ Series II tractors feature a longer wheelbase on all frames and employ a centre-pull design to add stability and deliver more power to the drawbar.

The row-crop TJ280 and TJ330 tractors are tailored to give producers true 30-inch row capability with a 4WD. The larger chassis TJ380 and TJ430 tractors and the high-capacity chassis TJ480 and TJ530 tractors are designed for heavy-duty agricultural and commercial uses.

Heavy-duty scraper models include the TJ380HD, TJ430HD, TJ480HD and TJ530HD. These tractors are equipped and weighted specifically for scraping, grading, levelling and earth moving. Equipped with heavy-duty final drives, thick bar axles, Reynolds Quick Hitch scraper drawbar and diff locks, the scraper models are operational with 18-yard scrapers.

STX and TJ tractors come standard equipped with a 16×2 full Powershift transmission. The clutch-free, push-button transmission has wider gears and extra clutch plates for more torque-carrying capacity. The operator can start travel in any of the first eight gears.

The transmission has electronic pulse width modulated shift solenoids. During a gear change, these solenoids modulate the pressure to the clutch packs for smooth engagement.

Also standard on all Powershift transmissions is AutoShift, which minimizes manual shifting during field and road operations. In field mode, AutoShift automatically downshifts to maintain engine rpm and torque as load increases and then upshifts as the load decreases. It uses the nine gears in the working range.

In road operation, it automatically selects the proper gears based on throttle input and shifts from eighth to 16th gear to achieve maximum transport speed, up to 23 mph.

Also available is the 24×6 Hi-Low synchroshift transmission, which is fully synchronized to allow easy shifting on the go with a rolling load. Nine speeds are available in the four to 8.5 mph working range.

All of the new tractors offer a performance instrumentation option that provides electronic end-of-row controls.

This system will record and then control up to 30 steps in two sequences, including up and down shifting, raising and lowering the three-point hitch and using remotes and throttle, through a single switch, greatly simplifying operation at the headlands.

All tractors in the new lineup are available with factory-installed auto-steering, which provides state-of-the-art automated guidance and GPS-satellite technology. The system automatically guides the tractor in straight lines with an accuracy of plus or minus 2.5 centimetres at speeds up to 18 mph.

For row-crop applications where precision steering and implement trailing is required, the small-frame STX280 and STX330 models offer optional Case IH-exclusive AccuSteer, which allows an articulated 4WD tractor to function like an MFWD tractor in the field. AccuSteer-equipped Case IH tractors have a turning radius of 12.4 feet, better than many rigid frame row crop tractors.

New Holland’s exclusive MegaFlow hydraulic option provides huge flow capacity and flexibility to power numerous functions at the same time without hindering performance.

MegaFlow runs 94 gallons per minute through two separate hydraulic pumps to meet the demand of power-hungry implements such as beet lifters, air seeders and laser land-leveling equipment.

By using two separate pumps, MegaFlow delivers dedicated hydraulic flow to the implement even while operating multiple hydraulic functions. Four remotes are standard, with an option of up to nine remotes. The TJ Series II also provides the highest wheel tractor hitch lift capacity at 19,620 pounds.
