FARGO, N.D. – The 29th annual Big Iron Show in Fargo, North Dakota, was the biggest so far, but many farmers missed it. The event, which ran Sept. 15-17, featured more than 800 exhibitors and field demonstrations, including the latest technology from implement manufacturers.

It is part of a wave of farm shows that starts with the Farm Progress Show in Illinois in early September, where new equipment is typically unveiled, and then spreads across the United States to smaller shows.

Like most farm shows, Big Iron has a waiting list of exhibitors wanting a booth. To meet that growing demand, organizers will add another building next year.

The new barn will have room for 80 more exhibitors and it’s already fully booked for 2010.

With that kind of popularity, it would be fair to assume the aisles would be shoulder-to-shoulder with farmers, and normally that’s the way it is. But not this year.

Big Iron is always scheduled for mid-September when wheat harvest is complete and farmers have a slight lull before getting into the corn.

But this year, producers in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota had a wet and cold summer, delaying their wheat harvest. Most decided to stay on their combines rather than go to the show.

But that didn’t prevent the exhibitors from flaunting their latest products. Nor did it prevent The Western Producer from making the trip to Fargo to ferret out new products we can expect to see on the Canadian Prairies in the foreseeable future.

The two products on this page are a peek at some of the Big Iron stories we’ll be bringing you in coming months. From the latest in big iron to the most advanced precision agriculture tools, we’ll be looking at North America’s most interesting agriculture offerings for 2010.
