We’ve made some changes to the Western Producer.
You may notice the paper’s dimensions are slightly smaller. That’s because we moved to a new printer in Western Canada that can print the paper more efficiently on this smaller size.
The subscribers I talked to at the last year’s Ag In Motion farm show who caught an early glimpse of the new paper design didn’t seem to mind, and a few even said it was easier to handle.
The order of the sections in the paper has also changed. Our front News section is now followed by the Editorial section.

Late season rainfall creates concern about Prairie crop quality
Praying for rain is being replaced with the hope that rain can stop for harvest. Rainfall in July and early August has been much greater than normal.
We have two market sections, one focused on grain and the other on livestock. In the Grain Markets section, we will continue to provide you with the key economic stories, including articles from Sean Pratt and columns from D’arce McMillan.
We’re also providing new columns, including from Bruce Burnett, a market analyst and meteorologist, who will provide information that helps farmers dive deeper into marketing decisions.
Immediately following the Grain Markets section will be a Crop Management section that will have a wide variety of production information.
We’re taking the same approach with our livestock content, with a dedicated Livestock Markets section, followed by a Livestock Management section. The Livestock Markets section has a new regular column from livestock markets analyst Jerry Klassen. The Livestock Management section will include the content that you’ve come to expect from the Livestock section of our newspaper.
After the Grain and Livestock sections, we have dedicated coverage of regional news for Western Canada, followed by a section called the Big Picture where we focus news stories from a broader perspective.
We then have the Farm Living section that is followed by special features when we have them, and then more news pages.
The Classified section has moved closer to the back of the paper, which will be followed by the weather feature. We decided to move the markets chart page online because we’ve received feedback that by the time this market’s data reached subscribers in the newspaper, it was no longer timely.
Visit producer.com/markets-futures-prices/ to see our new digital markets pages, which have been optimized for smartphones.
I am eager to hear what you think about these changes, so if you’d like to share your thoughts I’m available at robin.booker@producer.com.
