In response to the article Farmers worry about gov’t reaction to dog killings (WP, May 19), I would like to bring some points to the readers’ attention.

Why is Ev Gilmar putting farmers in the same category as a greedy opportunist who ran a sled dog operation and then murdered his business partners (dogs)? How many people would have paid for a sled ride if they knew the dogs would be killed soon after?

I am a rancher that produces animals for slaughter and we have a long-term plan, not a temporary get rich business venture. Our customers know the animals are fed and treated well. That’s why we stay in business.

Farmer ownership cannot be seen as a guarantee for success

It’s a powerful movement when people band together to form co-ops and credit unions, but member ownership is no guarantee of success.

I agree that animal cruelty laws should be enforced. It’s pathetic how some people look after their animals. I think increased fines and rules are necessary. People abusing animals are criminals. Maybe they should spend some time penned up and with little food, poor conditions and no voice.

Most farmers have their heart and soul into their livelihood. They take pride in providing a good life for animals that produce healthy nourishment for many families.
