The holiday season is an ideal time to report the results of our initial search for Good Samaritans.
The first call came from Norman Ermel of Cupar, Sask., who had a story of sadness and community spirit.
Art Findling, also of Cupar, passed away in mid-September. Friends and neighbors harvested Findling’s crop, which was about 800 acres of canola, durum and oats.
Regina businesses contributed to these efforts, among them Markusson New Holland, Freightliner and Bronco Plumbing.
Arnie and Susan Meyer have another story. The Clairmont, Alta., couple were on their way to Edmonton a few months ago when their truck broke down south of Valleyview, Alta.

Agriculture needs to prepare for government spending cuts
As government makes necessary cuts to spending, what can be reduced or restructured in the budgets for agriculture?
As they waited for a tow truck, another couple stopped to hel-10-P. The husband, described as a long, slim cowboy, shimmied under the truck to figure out the problem. That left the wife available for small talk.
One comment led to another, and Susan Meyer extracted the fact that Phil and Rita Hogg, the couple offering assistance, had met each other through the personal ads in The Western Producer. Meyer says she knows four or five other couples who met the same way.
Anthony Hruska of Esterhazy, Sask., alerted us to a more dramatic tale of rescue. In early November, Garry Moore, a farmer from Spy Hill, Sask., was driving near Shoal Lake, Sask., when the vehicle in front of him left the road, overturned and landed in a slough.
After determining the driver was alive and alert, Moore flagged down another vehicle, whose occupants in turn stopped another person for assistance.
Then the four of them used tire irons and a plank to force the door open and free the trapped woman. Moore says she didn’t have much breathing room by the time she was extracted, because the car was sinking in mud and water.
The woman called Moore just a few days ago and reported she is fine. He is humble about his role in the incident.
“I don’t want to take the credit for it. There were other people who helped.”
Unfortunately we don’t know the names of the two women and one man who assisted with the rescue, but they deserve recognition too.
Two other Good Samaritan cases are under the blotter, and more may follow, so I’ll report on them shortly.
