As we approach the date for our fourth federal election in seven years, I would like to ask this question: how can any prime minister with a minority possibly fulfill any election promise or keep our country functioning?
Every time I see Jack Layton on TV spouting off about the shortage of doctors and the poor condition of the health-care system, I could scream.
People running to the doctor for every ache and pain because it’s free is to blame. Anything so-called free is abused. It is not free. Our tax dollars pay for this abuse, leading to lack of health care.

People not taking care of themselves is the root of the problem. And most of it starts with not eating properly, leading to obesity, which leads to many health issues: diabetes, joints wearing out, heart problems, etc.
As for lack of doctors, how many doctors coming from a hot climate stay in rural centres across Canada, where the local hospital is only a Band-Aid centre? No surgeries are done or babies delivered. They cannot practice the skills they were trained for and after their initial contract, go to the city or to B.C. or the U.S.A., whichever best suits them.
The doctors also only want one problem per visit so they can bill the system for more visits. Whose idea was this?
People, wake up and take responsibility for your own well-being, and don’t depend on the medical system to fix everything. Prevention is the key.
