Work-around found for jar lid pickle

Viceroy to the rescue.

Farmers who relied on 78 mm lids were put in a pickle by Bernardin this year.

However, I have discovered that the rubber rings made by Viceroy work well with used Bernardin lids, even though the rubbers were intended for use with glass lids. Simply boil the rubber for the recommended 15 minutes, then place directly on the glass jar rims, top with the metal lid and secure with the screw band. The jar is ready to process.

It is a pity that Bernardin has such a monopoly in the market. Other lids such as the one-piece twist lids are manufactured in a variety of sizes and are available for purchase in Canada, but not to the canners.

If these lids were made available to home canners, I am certain that many “store” jars would be diverted from the landfill.
