Farmers need better government support

In recent times, the weights on farmers have become increasingly apparent worldwide. While the European Union and India witness farmers rallying against government policies, the question looms: why don’t we see similar actions from government and farmers here in Canada?

In the March 28 issue of The Western Producer, two articles shed light on the protests and refusals of government policies faced by farmers abroad. Farmers in Europe and India have demonstrated a remarkable resolve, standing up against policies they deem unjust.

Proactive approach best bet with looming catastrophes

The Pan-Canadian Action Plan on African swine fever has been developed to avoid the worst case scenario — a total loss ofmarket access.

These actions have led to increased support from political leaders and considerable adjustments to their previous regulations. Unity between government agencies and labourers only betters the industry and livelihoods of producers.

However, the scenario in Canada seems different. Despite the introduction of Bill C-234, aimed at supporting Canadian farmers, the momentum for substantial governmental action is lacking, and farmers continue to work with little support.

While Canadian farmers voice their concerns and support initiatives, the response from policymakers falls short of the resolute support witnessed in other parts of the world.

As citizens grapple with economic hardships and food security concerns, bridging this gap becomes imperative, especially for the farmers who provide said food.

These concerns seem to fall on deaf ears while the carbon tax continues to increase.

Nevertheless, the question persists: when will Canadian farmers receive the robust governmental support and action observed in other regions? It’s time to foster a strong dialogue between farmers, policymakers and communities to address the pressing needs of our agricultural sector, and take precautionary steps so we never see such protests.
