During seeding and harvest, The Western Producer hosts photo projects encouraging people to send in from-the-field images via social media or email.

There’s been an excellent response to these campaigns, with hundreds of images submitted.

This week, we also got a nod from the American Agricultural Editors’ Association at their 2015 awards for our photo initiative.

Determining tariff compensation will be difficult but necessary

Prime minister Mark Carney says his government will support canola farmers, yet estimating the loss and paying compensation in an equitable fashion will be no easy task, but it can be done.

My work at the Producer won second place in the Digital and Social Media category for the #Harvest14 photo project.

This is a big acknowledgment of our social media and digital efforts, especially considering the Producer was the only Canadian agricultural news organization to place in any of the categories at the AAEA awards this year.

The photo album is impressive with stunning pictures of farming and rural life from across the Prairies.

The pictures, photo album and award really belong to those who participated in #Harvest14.

So from me and the rest of The Western Producer staff, thank you for helping us build something incredible. We beat some tough competition south of the border.

Now, with winter wheat ripening and producers gearing up for harvest, we are getting ready to start our #harvest15 photo project. First place wins a $500 gift certificate from Don’s Photo.

This year, we’re adding a separate prize for our favorite short video submission. We haven’t yet established the maximum length of the video but it will be fairly short, possibly around 15 seconds.

If you’re interested in participating and you have a smart phone, there are many apps that will help you shoot and edit short videos. We will have a how-to guide for submissions available soon at producer.com.

For both the photo and video projects, we are looking for submissions that depict farming and farm life in Canada. We like the epic shots of modern production, but we also like pictures of faces and fun, as well as close-up shots of equipment preparation and all the details that make harvest possible.

We will be ready to take your submissions on Aug. 15, and we are looking forward to seeing and sharing your experience of #harvest15.
