Fred and Barney are a well-travelled team. The two Percheron geldings, raised by Ernie Yaschyshyn of Swan River, Man., recently moved from there to Whitehorse, Yukon, to start a new life.
Guy Sevignay of Whitehorse is the new owner, says Yaschyshyn. Sevignay and his wife, Elaine, own and operate Mountain View Trail Rides. Fred and Barney will be helping out their business by pulling a chuckwagon on a 100-kilometre trail through Yukon Territory this summer.
The horse half-brothers travelled about 2,800 km to their new home last month, according to Yaschyshyn’s estimates.

How is such a deal made? Yaschyshyn is a satisfied customer of the Western Producer classified ads, which helped him ink the deal. He sent us this kind note.
“As a rule, horses never sell that great in the Swan River Valley. Not many people use teams and they don’t realize the value, time and work that goes into breaking a team. So I decided to advertise in what I consider to be the top agricultural paper in Western Canada, the Western Producer. I have subscribed to this paper for years and always turn to the classified livestock horse section first. I figured I wasn’t the only rancher who does this, so what better place to advertise my team?…
“I was surprised to start getting calls from all across Canada and even the U.S. Potential buyers called from Ochre River, Sifton, Steinbach (and) La Broquerie in Manitoba; Yorkton, Saltcoats, Regina and Lloydminster in Saskatchewan; Okotoks, and Vegreville, Alberta; Montreal, Whitehorse and Fairbanks, Alaska.”
