The case of the missing calf near Pilot Butte, Sask., has been solved. What case, you ask?
Jacquie Prentice sent this photo and story to the Producer earlier this week of the mysterious incident at 49th Parallel Farms near Pilot Butte. Glen Hoffart took the photo.
Writes Jacquie: In our back calving corral, a cow calved in the darkness of night but the newborn calf was nowhere to be found. It’s a fairly small area so we found it strange the calf wasn’t with its mother.

High prices see cow-calf producers rushing to incorporate
Farm accountants are reporting a steady stream of cow-calf producers rushing to get their operations incorporated ahead of selling their calves this fall.
We searched the surrounding area for hours using flashlights and vehicle headlights. No luck.
My hubby, Glen, resumed the search at dawn but still nothing turned up.
Then he noticed that our lone mare, Eva, was standing over something far out in the neighbouring pasture. He drove the quad over and there she was, standing over the calf and protecting it while it slept.
Glen got the calf up and started moving it toward the gate, with Eva gently nudging it in the shoulders to keep it moving beside her.
Eva was very reluctant to turn the calf over but the cow and baby were reunited and are both doing well.
Thanks for the story, Jacquie and Glen.
