The Canadian Wheat Board has been constantly under attack by the present federal government, by the prime minister and by both the former … and present ministers of agriculture.
Now the prime minister has appointed one of his Ontario MPs to introduce a private member’s bill to, in effect, emasculate the CWB.
The farmers of Western Canada are quite capable of running their own business and have indicated on several occasions that they support the CWB.
The situation in the western farm community has drastically deteriorated in recent years.
Small towns have suffered, some have disappeared, country schools have all closed, farm sizes have doubled or tripled, machinery costs, fuel costs and all other input costs have increased beyond reality.
We’ve already suffered the loss of our wheat pools, and fear the loss of the CBC. The last thing we need is the demise of the CWB, the only powerful organization farmers have left.
