Thirteen people are running for five spots on the Canadian Wheat Board board of directors this fall, as representatives in the board’s odd-numbered districts. These 13 people are all to be admired and praised for their willingness to serve other farmers’ interests and to expend considerable time and effort on issues related to grain marketing.

Worrisome drop in grain prices

Prices had been softening for most of the previous month, but heading into the Labour Day long weekend, the price drops were startling.

1. Is the current grain marketing system doing the best job, or are changes needed to increase revenue and profitability for wheat and barley growers?
2. Should the wheat board advocate for farmers on policy issues such as transportation, trade and input costs, or should it stick to the business of selling grain?
3. Who should control the wheat board’s operations and activities, and is the structure of the board of directors working effectively?
Candidates were also given the opportunity to make some general comments, which form part of the candidate profiles.
It is our hope that this information, obtained in fair and objective manner, will assist farmers in making their voting decisions. The Western Producer’s editorial position on the board is that farmers themselves — the people who use and who are affected by the CWB — should be the ones to determine its activities and its future.
If that is to happen, the 28,481 eligible voters will have to mail in their ballots. Deadline for that is Dec. 3.
We hope you will read the profiles, check additional information at www.cwbelection.com and then cast your ballot.
