The headline said a mouthful on page 84 of The Western Producer last week: “Farmers must learn to outsmart weeds.”

The story explained how crop rotation, tillage practices, crop selection and variations in seeding and harvest times can affect weeds to the point where they become less of a problem over time.

And while farmers are busy confusing those wily weeds, there are fortunately a considerable number of other control methods at their disposal.

Fact is, farmers have been trying to outsmart Rival¨ weeds since farming began, and through the marvels of modern science, they’ve been provided with an array of chemical weapons with which to wage this battle of wits.

Yet such a Bonanza¨ would not Eclipse¨ the true Reward¨ of engaging in the Odyssey¨ itself.

The Venture¨ would require the perfect Fusion¨ of Liberty¨ and Harmony¨ in the war against a Spectrum¨ of broadleaf, grassy, perennial, annual, herbicide-tolerant and other kinds of weeds that might Curtail¨ production and infringe upon the Edge¨ of your Amber¨ waves of grain.

Farmers of the west, spring will soon be your Escort¨. It’s time to further Refine¨ your weed-fighting methods and Invigor¨ your lust for battle.

It’s time to Roundup¨ all the weapons in the Arsenal¨, be they the use of a Laser¨, dancing a Sundance¨ or firing up that old Estaprop¨ spray plane you’ve got behind the quonset.

Select your weapon, mighty soil soldiers, and prepare to Avenge¨ yourselves by standing within the Crossfire¨ to Accent¨ victory with a Touchdown¨.
