A farmer charged with shooting a man who was stealing his all-terrain vehicle is expected to appear in court early next year.
Brian Russell Knight of Tees, Alta., is scheduled to appear in Court of Queens Bench in Red Deer Jan. 14 to face weapons related charges.
Knight is charged with assault with a weapon, criminal negligence, illegal use of a firearm and pointing a firearm.
Knight’s wife woke him up in the early morning hours of March 26, 2009, after she heard voices in the farmyard.

Russian wheat exports start to pick up the pace
Russia has had a slow start for its 2025-26 wheat export program, but the pace is starting to pick up and that is a bearish factor for prices.
“Three males were observed outside of the residence,” police said in a statement.
“Two of the culprits jumped into (a) truck while the third culprit started a quad (all-terrain vehicle) that was just outside of the house. The truck and quad drove off.”
Knight used his car to chase Harold Groening, formerly of Mirror, Alta., on the ATV.
Police said Knight rammed his car into the ATV about two kilometres from the house, and both vehicles went into the ditch.
Knight fired two rounds from a shotgun at the fleeing Groening, who was struck but kept running.
Groening was later found and brought back to the scene of the collision.
Knight was charged in late spring of 2009.
The incident sparked an outpouring of financial support from across Canada for Knight’s defence.
Meanwhile, Groening pleaded guilty and was incarcerated April 22, 2010, on two charges of theft under $5,000 and one charge of possession of stolen property.
