Sugar boycott

We were mentioned in Organic Matters Dec. 16 for our product being featured in Dine with the Stars. Apparently my quote about farmers being the real stars for providing the food in the first place was pulled. It seems farmers are not allowed that high opinion of ourselves.

I rarely read theProducer,so full it is of conventional corporate farming concerns.

However, in the same issue, I read that Roger’s Sugar has been GMO for over a year and has not experienced much consumer boycott. This would be because the Tory government quashed the bill that would enable consumers to identify GM products at the grocery store. Without GMO labelling, consumers must mostly rely on scanty media coverage to discover GM products.

Government, industry seek canola tariff resolution

Governments and industry continue to discuss how best to deal with Chinese tariffs on Canadian agricultural products, particularly canola.

I, for one, will boycott Roger’s Sugar from now on. That should amount to a grand total of perhaps five pounds of sugar at most for my husband’s tea.

Thus I would urge larger concerns – bakers, cereal manufacturers, restaurants, hotel chains – to boycott Roger’s and all GM products, the main ones being Liberty corn, much canola and soy found in many every day products.

GMOs are not safe for the environment, for children and other living things, despite Monsanto’s eye-rolling propaganda in the recent article.

Consumers should make their MPs aware that they want GM labelling on products, especially when they are the main ingredient, in order to make informed choices for family and businesses.

Standing up for the health of your family and the environment may not win any popularity contests in the short term but in the long term it is truly all that matters.
