REGINA – The Saskatchewan Association of Communities and Schools Co-op is using the Charter of Rights to challenge the province’s Education Act.

The group said in its Court of Queen’s Bench statement the act violates four different sections of the charter. The group, formed four years ago to fight rural school closures, is seeking “declaratory remedy” for the violations under Section 52 of the charter.

“It’s a real shame that ordinary taxpayers/parents in this province are forced to spend so much effort and money taking the provincial government to court to win fundamental rights for children and parents,” said SACS president John Ivens, in a press release.

“It is the year of the family and this NDP government claims to have a strong commitment to human rights. What about our rights?”
