REGINA – A tentative agreement was reached April 29 in a 20-day strike by SaskTel workers.

SaskTel lead negotiator Byron Pointer confirmed a deal had been reached April 29, but no other details were announced at press time and picket lines remained Monday outside SaskTel offices.

About 3,600 members of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union walked out April 10 after rejecting a three-year package that included wage and benefit increases of about three percent. The previous contract expired in March 1995.

According to a government press release, the ratification process is expected to proceed this week and if both sides accept the deal, workers are expected to be back at work May 2.

Throughout the dispute, which centered on wages and job security, 650 managers operated the province’s telephone network. Telmart locations, where customers can pay bills and purchase telephones and other equipment, were closed.
