It will likely cost Saskatchewan natural gas customers less to heat their homes this winter.

SaskEnergy last week proposed a rate decrease, just as people prepare to turn on their furnaces.

The crown utility applied to the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel to adjust its commodity rate from $5.21 per gigajoule to $4.55, as of Nov. 1.

The decrease, if approved, would reduce annual average bills by $66 for residential customers and $272 for small and medium sized businesses.

Residential customers now pay about $945 per year.

SaskEnergy twice decreased its rates in 2009, and the proposed rate would be the lowest since the winter of 2000-01 when gas cost $4.52 per gigajoule.
