Two more large-scale hog barns have come on line in Saskatchewan, moving into production only a few months after being announced.
Both the Unity area Sask West Pork Producers complex and the Cando area Hi-Point Stock Farm have officially opened, with gilts now being brought in to fill the breeding barn.
Neither of the northwestern Saskatchewan farrow-to-finish operations is completed, although the most difficult construction is done.
Both of the 600-sow operations will produce 13,500 market pigs a year. The Quadra Group of Outlook, Sask. will manage the facilities.
While the Unity barn initially faced some local opposition, the project went ahead without many impediments after a successful public relations campaign, said barn president Blaine Reid.
People agreed
“We made people aware that a lot of the concerns people had weren’t valid,” Reid said on the day of the opening. “Obviously the people agreed with us because we collected over $900,000 in the area to go ahead with the project.”
Quadra projects involve money from Quadra, local partners and other investors.
