Producers living in rural municipalities that belong to the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan will soon have access to a group health benefits plan.
APAS president Terry Hildebrandt said the executive hopes to present a final version of the plan at the organization’s annual meeting in December. Members heard about the proposal at the mid-term meeting late last month.
“Many organizations offer a membership package through volume purchasing,” he said. “It’s an option for our members.”
Hildebrandt said many farmers don’t carry accident insurance, but APAS hopes to offer it at a reasonable rate, along with basic life and dental insurance.
“It has to be something that’s cheaper than an individual could get,” he said. “Of course, the price all depends upon uptake.”
STRATA Benefits, which put together a package for Keystone Agricultural Producers in Manitoba, is developing the APAS package as well.
Also at the APAS mid-term meeting, members approved an up-to-date policy manual and discussed ongoing plans by Canadian farm organizations for a BSE contingency plan.
