Saskatchewan’s learning minister has named the people who will draw the province’s new school division map.

Andrew Thomson had previously announced that former Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation general secretary Fred Herron would chair the education equity task force.

He will be joined by Shirley Batters, a former elementary school teacher and public school board chair in Estevan, and Al Klassen of Central Butte, former president of the Saskatchewan School Boards Association.

The task force will hold formal hearings before developing the new map.

Thomson has said he wants Saskatchewan’s 82 school divisions reduced to no more than 40, but also wants at least 5,000 students in a division, which could mean as few as 20 divisions.

The task force is to present the map to Thomson by Nov. 15, and the new school divisions would take effect Jan. 1, 2006.
