Court proceedings scheduled for last week were adjourned after Viterra and the Grain Services Union announced a potential pension settlement.

GSU members will vote on the agreement in mid-January. About 15 percent of Viterra employees are members of the pension plan.

Other members include workers of companies formerly owned by Saskatchewan Wheat Pool.

The agreement calls for Viterra to take full responsibility for funding solvency deficiency payments in the former SWP-GSU plan.

The company will also assume full administration of the plan and move all active employees to a defined contribution plan by July 1, 2008.

The two parties have been trying for three years to resolve the solvency deficiency in the plan, now estimated at $19 million.

Some employees of The Western Producer belong to the Grain Services Union and the SWP-GSU pension plan.
