The first major packing plant to open in Canada since the late 1980s

will be built in the Borden-Carleton area of Prince Edward Island.

Co-op Atlantic and the newly formed Atlantic Beef Producers

Co-operative will each own half of Atlantic Tender Beef Inc.

The location was chosen because it is close to the largest percentage

of cattle in the Atlantic region and to the Confederation Bridge, which

connects the province to the mainland.

“We will be able to service all of the Atlantic region’s beef producers

out of this plant efficiently and effectively,” said Dean Baglole,

chair of the beef co-op.

The plant will cost between $11.5 and $15 million. It is expected to

open late next year or early 2004, and will initially process 600

cattle per week.
