Simplot Canada’s new anhydrous ammonia plant in Brandon, Man., should be up and running for at least part of this spring season, said the company.

An existing plant has been operating during the upgrade, and the new facility is expected to be in full operation by the end of April.

The two and one-half year construction project moved into the commissioning stage in February, a process where steam is forced through the system at high pressures to clean out gravel and rust, which gathered during construction.

The high-speed rotating compressors still have to be tested, said a release, after which the plant will start producing 1,250 tonnes of ammonia per day.

As well as the upgrade, Simplot doubled its storage capacity at the site east of Brandon.

A new 18,000-tonne ammonia storage tank built alongside the upgrade project is expected to be complete and ready for use by the end of March.
