SASKATOON (Staff) – New varieties of most crops were approved by the Prairie Registration Recommending Committee for Grain last week.

The recommendations, which are generally accepted by the federal agriculture department, allow the varieties to be sold by companies and grown by producers.

Eleven varieties of wheat were recommended, including three Canada Red Spring Wheats, one durum, two Canada Prairie Spring wheats (one white and one red), one extra-strong wheat and four fall ryes (some with interim registrations.)

A plethora of legumes were approved, including 12 pea varieties, eight field beans and three fava beans.

Two buckwheat varieties are being recommended.

Eight varieties of barley were approved, including two two-row malting type varieties, one hulless and five six-row varieties (some on an interim basis.)

Relatively few oilseeds, excluding canola, are being recommended. One dwarf sunflower and two flax varieties were approved.
