The fate of the Canadian Wheat Board was a hot topic at the Keystone Agricultural Producers general council meeting on Oct.11.

About 50 KAP delegates voted to support the Real Voice for Choice pro-wheat board group, demand a plebiscite on the wheat board’s future and ask the federal government to include all prairie farm groups in its consultations and provide compensation and transition money to the board if its monopoly is broken.

Delegates also called on Ottawa to make farm support programs simple and cost effective so money can get into farmers’ hands when they need it.

Delegates supported a resolution to end the kernel visual distinguishability system so farmers can more quickly get access to new crop varieties.

Highways and roads should be designed so that farm equipment and non-farm vehicles can safely use them, said another resolution passed by delegates.

KAP and Manitoba’s highway department should work together to make sure future road construction takes farm vehicle requirements into account, delegates added.
