From 1995 to 2005 Western Canada’s hog numbers increased by almost 40 percent to 6.4 million and with each new barn came controversy and pollution worries. The experience isn’t unique. Western Producer Winnipeg-based reporter Ed White travelled to Iowa, a pork powerhouse with 16.1 million pigs, to find out how five decades of hog production have affected the state’s water resource. Officials there say the industry is just as controversial, but with good regulations and management, pollution worries are controlled.
