A new crop is sprouting from prairie soil this spring.
Hog barns. And like any other crop, inputs will be necessary to grow them.
Three more hog production facilities are being proposed for Saskatchewan, all destined for areas that have few hogs now.
Meadow Lake, Sask., is the planned home for a Big Sky Pork farrow-to-finish project. The $13.25 million plan won over rival proposals from Heartland Livestock of Regina and Quadra Group of Outlook. The Big Sky Pork plan was adopted by local participants due to a local focus the company has on sourcing feed, construction and other needs.

Local investors sought
Saskatchewan’s deep south is the proposed home of a similar operation, this one to be operated by Heartland Livestock. The new barns are destined for the Wood River area southwest of Moose Jaw, Sask.
One quarter of the $12.6 million investment will come from area residents, another quarter from Heartland and the balance to be debt financed. Local equity investors are to have the opportunity to provide feed grains to the operation.
These facilities are expected to produce 50,000 animals
annually.
As well, a smaller facility was recently announced for Brock, Sask. A 13,500 annual production facility is planned for the town 165 kilometres west of Saskatoon.
A joint venture between local farmers, business people and Quadra Group will be known as Hillsburgh Pig Investors Group. The group will offer shares in the project once it is approved by the Saskatchewan Securities Commission.
