MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Beef prices fell across the Prairies on June 21 to help increase awareness of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy crisis and raise money for charity.
In Moose Jaw, Sask., local trucking companies, XL Foods, IBP’ s Lakeside Packers and others organized a $1 per pound ground beef sale that attracted more than 500 people and sold a truckload in just an hour.
The same day in Calgary and Lethbridge, similar events brought out crowds that didn’t hesitate to buy all the frozen beef they could carry.
On June 23, politicians and cattle industry leaders flipped burgers for crowds at the back door of the Manitoba legislature.
Moose Jaw organizers said the event wasn’t about making money, but to show support for the industry.
