Former Saskatchewan premier Grant Devine is out.

Instead, an Estevan lawyer will run for the Conservative party in Saskatchewan’s Souris Moose Mountain constituency in the next federal election.

Ed Komarnicki won the controversial nomination Feb. 28 after a last-minute effort by Devine supporters to have his name on the ballot.

After Devine announced his candidacy, the national nominations committee said he wasn’t qualified to run. Eleven people went to court in Estevan Feb. 26, asking for the nomination to be delayed or for Devine’s name to be on the ballot.

Injunction denied

The application for an injunction was dismissed and voting began immediately.

Komarnicki won on the first ballot. Doug Cryer finished second, and Barry Spencer was third.

The current MP is Roy Bailey, who decided not to seek re-election.
