The University of Saskatchewan has signed an agreement that clears the way for development of a vaccine to control chronic wasting disease.Officials from the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization signed an agreement last week with Pan-Provincial Vaccine Enterprise Inc., which gives the enterprise exclusive rights to use proprietary technology developed by VIDO.That technology will be used to target the fatal and incurable prion disease that has infected wild and domestic deer and elk herds in Canada and the United States. The proposed vaccine would control CWD in wild deer and elk and reduce the potential for cross species transmission to traditional livestock species.“Further spread of CWD can potentially devastate industries and rural populations that rely on these species,” said Andrew Potter, chief executive officer and director of VIDO.“The … facilities in our new International Vaccine Centre, set to open in late 2010, will enable further work on this vaccine and others.”The University of British Columbia, PrioNet Canada and the University of Toronto are also stakeholders.
