To the Editor:
It was most gratifying to see the turnout of concerned farmers at the rally in support of the Canadian Wheat Board single desk (last week). It shows that they fully understand the danger they are facing with Harper’s draconian measures planned to eliminate it. Despite all the propaganda that the multinational grain companies and the present government are peddling, the danger is real. It is no wonder the grain companies are so anxious for the wheat board’s elimination; they stand to gain multimillions of dollars, and would be able to dictate what price farmers receive for their grain — without the board forcing them to pay top dollar.

We can only surmise that these same farmers will remember that when the next election rolls around. A government that caters to the multinationals is not exactly their friend.
In 1932, my father shipped a load of oats down east and found he had to pay an extra $12 just to cover the freight. When the grain is not even worth the price of the freight, you need a wheat board to fight your battles for you, believe me.
That is what is in store for them all if the government manages to carry out its threat to dismantle the single desk. There is no better time to fight for it than right now, while you still have the chance.
