A 23-year old Baldur, Man., farmer is behind bars after a provincial court judge sentenced him to two months in jail and $2,500 in fines last week for illegally selling a truckload of barley south of the border.

Clayton Desrochers was convicted in November of two customs-related charges for failing to report his barley exports in writing and unlawfully removing a vehicle seized by Canada Customs.

The charges stem from a March 15, 1996 border protest near the customs port of Lyleton, Man.

Desrochers was sentenced to two months in jail and one year probation by a provincial court judge in Dauphin, Man., Jan. 15, according to crown prosecutor Chris Mainella.
