RAMA, Sask. – About 20 farmers blockaded the road into Big Sky Farms’ feed mill north of Rama, Sask., November 24.

The farmers, some driving five hours to reach the protest location, say they are owed more than $1 million for grain delivered to the pig producer but not paid for. They are a few of the grain growers owed up to $15 million for wheat and barley that has been fed to the Humboldt, Sask., company’s pigs.

The group is calling on the Saskatchewan Party government to cover their losses as Big Sky moves through the creditor protection process.

The farmers are listed as unsecured creditors and as such, they say, are unlikely to be compensated for the grain they delivered. Many say the company issued bad cheques to them to pay for the grain.

Daryl Possberg, director of corporate development for Big Sky Farms met with the farmers at the Rama site, however he said the creditor protection process had to follow its course.

The mill was unable to receive or ship grain on November 24.
