Re: Stampede takes action on animal welfare,WP,July 1.

The Calgary Stampede’s animal care advisory panel is a thinly disguised attempt to deflect increasing public distaste for the animal abuse inherent in most rodeo events, particularly calf-roping.

The inclusion of the president of a public research firm on the panel clearly indicates that this is more about public relations than animal welfare. At a recent public event in Vancouver, renowned animal scientist Temple Grandin stated that she had no doubt calf-roping is based on fear. Furthermore, she stated it was nothing like roping done on the ranch, which she described as done quietly and calmly. When asked what she thought of the event, she proclaimed, “I don’t like it.”

The public won’t be fooled. Calgary Stampede officials need to show good faith by dropping the most egregious events, including calf-roping. Anything less, and they are risking the good will of their paying customers.
