REGINA – A Manitoba man and 25 horses were killed in a two-vehicle accident on the Trans-Canada Highway about two kilometres west of Regina last week.

William G. Little, 65, of Hamiota, Man., was the driver of a north-bound pick-up truck which collided with a west-bound semi-trailer unit around 11:30 p.m. Sept. 14.

Little was thrown from his truck and pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi-trailer swerved into the ditch and burst into flames. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the trailer, which contained 45 horses.

Driver of the semi-trailer, Stephan Gibson, 27, of Airdrie, Alta., was taken to hospital with minor injuries, treated and released.

Nineteen of the horses, which were being taken to a packing plant in Alberta, died at the scene from their injuries. Six more died the next day. The surviving horses were being cared for by a local farmer.

An RCMP spokesperson said no charges had been laid but the investigation was continuing. An autopsy of Little has been ordered.
