Earth may be moving this fall on a new flax crushing and processing plant in Brandon, its proponents say.

As soon as soil test results show the 47 acre site is environmentally clean, construction will begin.

“We’re in a bit of a wait mode until we get (the soil test results) back,” said Brandon consultant Rick Brugger, who organized the financing for the $30 million plant.

“We can get going before the winter sets in, hopefully.”

Shape Foods of Burnaby, B.C., will operate the plant producing omega 3 flax oil and meal for human consumption. The flax meal will contain about 13 percent oil.

Brugger said the plant should consume about 70,000 acres of flax production.

The company had wanted to begin construction by Oct. 1, but needs to complete the land deal first.

Shape Foods has an agreement to buy the site in a Brandon industrial park for $250,000, a deal that will be completed once the soil tests are completed, Brugger said. The site is bigger than required, but the company wants room for future expansion.
