The city of Moose Jaw has taken over the property of Moose Jaw Pork Packers for unpaid bills of more than $700,000.
City manager Garry McKay said the business formerly known as Worldwide Pork – and Tai Wan Pork before that – did not pay any taxes to the city after it restructured and briefly reopened in 2006 as MJPP. It has been empty since.
Taxes owed by Worldwide had been written off as part of the restructuring that led to the formation of MJPP, McKay said.

Taking over the title is about a three-year process that begins after a business is one year in arrears, he said.
“Every effort is made to have the owner pay the taxes,” he said.
In addition to $600,000 in taxes, the company owes about $116,000 in worker compensation levies.
Under tax enforcement legislation, the property must now go to public tender. Tenders will close three weeks after it is advertised.
McKay said he hopes the building and land will attract potential buyers and the city will recover its money.
“We can reject any bid below any outstanding amount,” he said. “Our objective is we collect whatever we can.”
