The canola industry is still waiting for the Chinese market to open to Canadian seed, but some players are becoming hopeful.

“The crush margins are just too good there (in China) so I think they’re going to allow them,” said Don Roberts of CanolaInsight.com.

Chinese restrictions on imports of seed testing positive for blackleg have stopped trade.

There is no open acceptance of Canadian canola yet, but Roberts said many industry observers think two large ships in Vancouver, both capable of carrying 60,150 tonnes, are being loaded with canola for China.

Roberts said Chinese crushers had contracts for 200,000 to 250,000 tonnes more canola than had been shipped by Nov. 15, so Chinese regulators might find a way to allow those shipments to occur.

Canola Council of Canada president JoAnne Buth said hopeful Chinese importers are still waiting to receive approval from their import regulators to bring in Canadian canola seed to ports in nonrapeseed growing areas.
