Feed Grains: Argentine drought threatens corn

Winnipeg, Dec. 8 (CNS) – Following are a few highlights in
the Canadian and world feed grains markets for Friday, Dec. 8.

The drought in Argentina is threatening late planted corn,
according to a story from Reuters. Argentina is one of the
world’s top exporters of corn. Concerns about shortages of
Argentine corn have put upward pressure on Chicago futures
prices. About half of the corn crop is planted late in the
season; however the earlier planted corn could start drying out

due to the lack of rain.

Wheat and barley stocks in Ukraine are down this year,
according to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. Wheat
stocks were down 4.2 per cent while barley stocks were down 28.3
per cent. Corn inventories as well were lower this year at 12.4
per cent less. The decrease in grain inventories stems from crop
downturns this year, as well barley and wheat exports were quite
active in the first third of the year, unlike corn shipments.

Feed barley bids in Montana have rose 12 cents to US$2.52
to US$2.87, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Feed barley
bids in North Dakota however are holding steady at US$1.70 to
US$2.40.

Corn bids in North Dakota rose one cent this week to
between US$2.51 and US$2.87.
