Agco’s new Momentum planter was released in South America early in 2019 and came to North America last week. It offers greater on-board seed capacity, narrow folding and up to 40 rows of planting. | Agco photo

Agco weathers four tough growing seasons

Warranty issues and an ill-fated move to more environmentally acceptable Tier 3 engines in Brazil challenge finances

Tough times in agriculture across the globe have put some farm machinery makers into financial difficulties. Agco, the world’s third-largest full-line manufacturer, saw lower earnings and higher expenses than expected, but it will be able to share with equity holders and maintain research and expansion, says its chief executive officer. Martin Richenhagen told the investment […] Read more

Cordless drill turns ratchet binders into power binders

BRANDON — Conventional over-centre lever boomers are falling out of favour because of safety issues, along with the fact they loosen with vibration. For those reasons, most people today prefer ratchet-style boomers. Over-centre boomers never pulled up tight enough to begin with, which contributed to the problem of loosening. They are not allowed in many […] Read more

Bike makes the path from the field fast and green

Saskatchewan equipment builder creates electric ride with farm utility, from checking crops to shuttling

Strapping a bike onto farm equipment to ride home from the field used to be commonplace, before farms spanned multiple townships and towing an all-terrain vehicle to do the same job made more sense. But if Kramble Industries is successful with its new product line, bikes will again commonly be used to ferry farmers to […] Read more

These wireless magnetic taillights from StarLight Lighting run off the seven-pin plug at the back of your truck. The male receives all the signals that the seven-pin female receives. It then switches from receiver to transmitter, instantly sending the signal out to the magnetic light units. The system sells for $489. | Ron Lyseng photo

Magnetic wireless trailer lights offer solution

Eliminating wires means eliminating electrical shorts, and that means you and your trailer get on the road faster

BRANDON — If you’ve trailered much, you know that lights are a hassle. Seems there’s always a trailer light problem just as you’re ready to pull your fishing boat or camper trailer. This revelation is followed by two hours tracking the short, thus getting the fishing trip off to a grouchy start. Here comes wireless technology […] Read more

The G4 May Wes Stalk Stomper is a 12-inch wide plate made of half-inch thick UHMW poly, mounted in front of the combine tire to prevent tire damage. | Ron Lyseng photo

Protecting tires from tough plants

BRANDON — It looks something like a mud flap that fell off a semi-trailer, but it’s a mighty helpful piece of heavy duty rubber if you grow corn. Corn stalks destroy tires. The list of devices designed to protect tires from corn stalks just gained a new member, the May Wes G4 Stalk Stomper, from […] Read more

It was a Big Bud. A thing of farmboy lore and it was made next door in Montana. On the Prairies, next door is anywhere within 350 miles and Havre, Mont., is 347 miles away from our farm.

Is the future in steel weed management?

I love a good farm show. Heck, I’d love a bad farm show, but I can’t say I’ve ever been to one. My enthusiasm for farm shows began when I was a kid growing up on the farm. It was always a good day to miss a little school and go learn more about something […] Read more

The Duo Lift patent application, above, spells out why the trailer is different from others. The narrow track of the front dolly tires allows the front end to make a sharper turn compared to other trailers with the conventional wide track front tires. The long tie rod connecting the front dollies to the rear six tires allows those rear tires to steer around a sharp field driveway in the same way that long fire trucks used to have a guy at the back with a steering wheel for the back end of the truck. | Duo Lift image

Six-wheel-steering trailer gets around

The new Duo Lift drives rings around conventional trailers where the turning gets tough and the yard tight

Combine heads are getting bigger and bigger. As a result, the problem of transporting them and gracefully getting them from the road into the field is becoming bigger and bigger. A solution can be found in trailer technology. Wide heads require long trailers. But the problem compounds itself. Longer trailers create bigger problems getting in […] Read more

When the seeding iron wears out, give it new life

Rebuilding a disc drill can be a substantial undertaking, both in time and money. One popular line, the John Deere 1890-1895 units, can handle a lot of acres before their discs and hubs are done, but after that their future is often forfeit. Saskatchewan seeding equipment builder Kim Hartman liked the Deere 1890-1895 units and […] Read more
