HOGS

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $82.66 July 18. It was not available July 11.

U.S. hogs averaged $105.55 on a carcass basis July 18, down from $106.69 July 11.

The U.S. pork cutout was $117.79 per hundredweight July 18, up from $113.47 July 11.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to July 18 was 2.333 million. It was 2.314 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.331 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the July 19 Signature Four price was $254.43 per 100 kilograms, up from $253.58.

Food vs. fuel debate simmers in the background

The OECD/FAO are forecasting that 27% of the global cereals crop will go to biofuels and other industrial purposes by 2034.

The July 19 Hams Marketing cash price was $252.43, while on July 12 it was $251.58. HyLife was $270.79 this week; it was $269.12 July 12. OlyWest was $263.80, down from $266.20 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was down, at $267.20, from $267.70, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $271.13 this week, while on July 12 it was $269.12.

BISON

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $635-$690 per cwt., hot hanging weight, for finished bulls and $610-$650 per cwt. for finished heifers. Mature bulls were $500-$550 per cwt., while mature cows were $500-$550 per cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$485-$500 per for bulls and $450-$475 per cwt. for heifers.

Prices for mature and cows were not available.

All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bulls and cows in Canada were not available. The mixed live animal price was $5.25 per pound.

LAMBS

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 272 sheep and 1,003 lambs sold July 14.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,528 sheep and 608 goats sold July 14.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $330-$415 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $305-$380, 70-85 lb. were $300-$370, 86-105 lb. were $290-$340, and 106 lb. and heavier were $285-$315. Wool rams were $210-$265 per cwt. Cull ewes were $170-$275.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $270-$355, 55-69 lb. were $270-$355, 70-85 lb. were $280-$350, 86-105 lb. were $270-$335 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$300. Hair rams were $170-$265 per cwt. Cull ewes were $170-$250.
