Glacier FarmMedia – Gathering weight data is the first step for beef farmers who want to manage their herd more precisely.

Purchasing a scale to gather that data is the first step, said Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture livestock and feed specialists at the Livestock Agtech Happy Hour at Ag In Motion.

Scales can help gather weights for calves and cows and enable more accurate administration of medications by knowing exact weights. While weighing, there’s also a good chance to body condition score the cattle. Alexis DeCorby, a livestock and feed extension specialist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture says cattle should be evaluated on a five-point scale.
